"Christ" - Day 53

Matthew 16:16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the CHRIST, the Son of the living God.”

The word "Christ" is derived from a Greek word meaning anointed. In the Old Testament anointing was used for an occupation, or as a blessing. Kings were anointed by God's prophets, Moses anointed the tabernacle to make it holy, and priests were anointed before they served before the Lord. When Jesus identified himself as the Christ in his hometown, he used Isaiah 61:1-2 to do it “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor". Let us give thanks to God for Jesus, our Christ, who was anointed to do all these things - and actually did them!
