Day 12 - Christ as a stone that makes people stumble

Prophesied in Scripture: He will be a holy place; for both Israel and Judah he will be a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall. And for the people of Jerusalem he will be a trap and a snare. Isaiah 8:14

Fulfilled in Scripture: and, “A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for. I Peter 2:8

Jesus causes unbelievers to stumble, yes, that is true for those in rebellion against God. But those of us who call ourselves Christians are also stumbling all over the place! Because Jesus knows (and cares deeply about) our hearts. Earlier in I Peter 2, it says "Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind." The church is riddled with these things! When was the last time you told a lie? Not ringing any bells? What about embellishing a story to make yourself sound better? Exaggerating? What about the last time you made an assumption about someone by their appearance or a single comment they made? Have you ever talked about someone behind their back? We love to do this at church, and we always follow it up by "we should pray for them" to make ourselves feel justified. Thank God that Jesus doesn't put up with our sins, he trips us up until we deal with them and then we can go on our way. Let us heed the Holy Spirit and hold each other accountable.
