“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be
with you forever—the Spirit of truth.” John 14:16
“Now it is God who… anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us and
put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.”
I Cor. 1:21-22
I walked into the kitchen at work last week. One of my coworkers appeared upset and said she was having a hard time finding a turkey breast for Thanksgiving that was, in her words, “kosher or halal or holy to God.” She asked if I might know where to find one or if I had ever gotten one. I told her I hadn’t, because I am a Christian and the Bible teaches that we are no longer required to avoid or eat certain foods. I explained that before Christ died it was a law to do so, but after his death, we were no longer under that law. I said the Bible teaches that what goes into your mouth doesn’t make you unclean, but what comes out of your heart. She said although she is a Muslim, she understood because had studied the Bible in Catholic school as a child.
It was a poignant reminder to me of the freedom we have in Christ. Not only did his sacrifice put an end to unclean foods, more importantly, it put an end to unclean people. Before Christ came, we who are Gentiles, were considered unclean and hopelessly lost. Contrastingly, before he left this earth, Christ promised he would send us, all of us, a Counselor. This Counselor is the Holy Spirit we receive at baptism. Through the Spirit in us, we are not only made clean, we are literally marked with a seal of ownership. We are no longer unclean people because we are covered by the Holy Spirit, guided by truth, and freed from the law of sin. This freedom that we have through the Spirit is truly worth cherishing and celebrating now and in every season.
