Neither Hot Nor Cold
“Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.”
-Revelation 3:22, 15-18
Being cold, or not knowing God, is not as bad as knowing Him but not fully accepting His rule in our lives. This is a grave danger for all of us. When we have God's Spirit in our hearts, but we keep ignoring HIs gentle wisdom and correction, eventually He goes quiet. God will never insert Himself where He is not wanted. It is a terrifying thing to place yourself on God's throne, but we do it all the time. Every time we push aside time with Him for more "important" things, every time we think that we have advanced in life by our own hard work, every time we think we are better than others, every time we ignore cries for help, every time we take an easy way out of hard responsibilities, every time we replace God with other "good" things that are really just idols - we are creating a lukewarm spirituality for ourselves. I will be the first to admit that I am horribly guilty of this. I do just enough to put on a false front as a "good Christian", but I don't give until it hurts. I don't sacrifice my time for Jesus. I don't allocate my resources to put God first. I don't inconvenience myself to help my brothers and sisters in need. Lord, come quickly! Please help me! Holy Spirit humble my heart! Sisters and brothers, literally for the love of Jesus Christ, we need to sharpen each other! The devil is a prowling lion looking to devour us, and we are lazily defenseless. Come Lord Jesus, wake us up, and may we be on fire for you again!
