"Good Shepherd" - Day 24
John 10:11,14 “I am the GOOD SHEPHERD. The GOOD SHEPHERD lays down his life for the sheep...I am the GOOD SHEPHERD; I know my sheep and my sheep know me - just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep."
In these verses, Jesus was speaking to the Jewish religious leaders of the day after they accused him of violating the Sabbath (a holy day when you weren't supposed to work). What was his crime? Jesus had healed a man born blind. The religious leaders had completely missed the miracle in the midst of their rules! In the verses above, Jesus tried to tell them that he wasn't against God's Sabbath day, but in fact he was fulfilling the holy Sabbath by helping his "sheep" - in this case the man born blind. Furthermore, he told them he would rather die than see harm come to his people. But, later (in verses 19 and 20): "The Jews who heard these words were again divided. Many of them said, 'He is demon-possessed and raving mad. Why listen to him?' " How often do we do the same? Our mouths praise God but our lives reveal our disbelief. We say we trust in the Lord, but when God breaks one of our "rules" we are completely upset. Thanks be to God for sending Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who guides us wayward sheep back to the truth - that he knows us, he died for us, he rose from the grave, and he is coming back again!
