Day 3 – Christ’s silence before his accusers
Prophesied in Scripture: Those who want to kill me set their traps, those who would harm me talk of my ruin; all day long they scheme and lie. I am like the deaf, who cannot hear, like the mute, who cannot speak
Fulfilled in Scripture: When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?” But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor. Matt 27:12-14
How often do we get defensive? How many times do we lash out when we are accused (even passive aggressively)? It is incredibly ironic that we as sinners are the first to jump to defending our character or our actions, whereas the spotless Lamb of God made no effort to build a case. Though he had the wisdom of the cosmos, he did not attempt to logically present why his accusers were in the wrong. This takes the wisdom of the Holy Spirit. While we see Christ come to the defense of the poor, helpless, and needy multiple times in Scripture, he doesn’t open his mouth to help himself. Let’s humbly be thankful for his example, and turn to the Holy Spirit first when we encounter struggles.
