"Jesus" - Day 54

Luke 1:30-33 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him JESUS. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

Matthew 1:20-21 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name JESUS, because he will save his people from their sins.”

Both Mary and Joseph were told by an angel of God that their son would be called Jesus. Jesus comes from the Hebrew name Joshua, which means Yahweh (God) saves, which is why earlier, we saw an angel tell shepherds that "A Savior" was born to them. In fact, Israel had many saviors - judges, prophets, and kings - who would bring the people back to God when they strayed. But Jesus wasn't just a savior like the rest of them, he was THE Savior. Even though God was able to work through the other human saviors, the name Jesus as "God saves" actually meant for the very first time that God HIMSELF was coming to save his people. And after Jesus came, there was no more saving needed! As Jesus said on the cross, "It is finished." His work is done - death is defeated and we are free from sin! Thanks be to God for Jesus, THE God-Savior of the world!
