“Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”
These are the very first words that were captured from the time Jesus spent here on earth with us! He was 12 years old, most likely starting to learn the carpentry trade from his earthly father Joseph. They were visiting the temple in Jerusalem with their family for Passover. Little did his parents know that many Passovers later their boy would be eating his last supper with his disciples before his crucifixion to save the world from their sins. But before all that, here in these verses we see only a small glimpse of his great wisdom and his heart of love for his heavenly Father’s kingdom. We are told he was asking questions, and giving answers to people at the temple for three days while his parents looked for him. All were amazed at his understanding. Most importantly though, we see a yearning, even a great need to carry out kingdom work. He HAD to be in his Father’s house! Nothing was more important than this. And we must do the same, forsaking all else but the noble work of God – whatever that may be for each of us. Let’s be so thankful that first and foremost, Jesus even as a boy, did all he could to bring hearts back to God’s Truth!
