"The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." Matthew 23:11-12
We had the wonderful privilege of working with children in Detroit through the Life Builders program yesterday (more information about this great ministry may be found by clicking HERE.) During that time, we interacted with many amazing children from K-5th grade. Our purpose was to spend time with them, have fun, and try to point them to Christ. At one point during lunch, one of the boys noticed that all of the adult volunteers were serving food to the attendees, and helping them with anything they needed, but the volunteers weren't eating themselves. He observed, "You guys are kind of like our servants." And he was right! I tried to explain to him that Jesus served people, so we wanted to serve people too. However, I think that this also is how Jesus sends his Holy Spirit to us - in times of service. The Holy Spirit himself is our Counselor, our Helper. He ministers to us in our time of need (always). When we humble ourselves, we become like him - and the sacrifice of a broken and contrite heart is when God is finally able to exalt our soul. Thank you Lord for sending Jesus as a servant to show us how to love well!
