You are set free

November 23, 2016

On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, 11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her,

Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.”

Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God. Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue leader said to the people, “There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.” The Lord answered him,

You hypocrites! Doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water? Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?”

When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated, but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.  Luke 13:10-17

While this passage may look very similar to one I posted earlier (HERE), there are so many different things about this passage I want to point out.  The woman in the other post was active, she sought healing from Jesus.  However, this woman was passive, she was so stooped over that she couldn't see Jesus.  BUT HE SAW HER.  Jesus saw her, took notice of her, called to her, and healed her - without any action on her part.  This is the type of mercy we are dealing with when it comes to Jesus!  He SEES us!  He knows your suffering, even when you can't see him, feel his presence, or if you are still trying to figure out who this Jesus person is - Jesus sees you.  And Jesus WILL heal you.  For those of us who "see our enemies prosper" - shame on us.  We don't know their story.  These days, so much suffering is sight unseen for us.  (If you think that God is giving a "lucky break" to everyone but yourself, then you need to check yourself - you don't see them they way God sees them and you don't know their story.  Don't be like the hypocritical synagogue leader.)  Thanks be to our Heavenly Father for Jesus - our God who sees what we need, comes to us, and heals us.
