Take courage (Part I)

November 25, 2016

Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.  Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them:

“Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

Matthew 14:22-27

I love this passage for so many reasons.  There are three separate quotes from Jesus that I want to cover in this chapter.  For this first part, we see Jesus telling us to not fear, and to take courage.  But where are we getting our courage from?  From who are we supposed to take our courage?  During the time when Jesus walked the earth, his disciples were to draw courage from him.  And Jesus still lives in our hearts.  But today, in this day and age, we are called to draw courage from our Counselor, our Comforter, God's Holy Spirit that Jesus sent to us after he left the earth.  Jesus told us that it was actually better that he left so the Holy Spirit could come.  God's Spirit brings a richness of so many gifts to our souls, only one of which is GREAT COURAGE in the face of any and every fear we face.  So let's thank God for the Holy Spirit first and foremost, and secondly for the courageous strength we can get from him.
