Bread alone (Part I)

December 8, 2016

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written:

Man shall not live on bread alone.’ ”  Luke 4:1-4

We easily talk (and even sing) about how this verse means we need to live by "every word" of God and not "bread alone". However, I think we often misinterpret by thinking God's word is supplemental to bread, whereas in truth it is bread that is supplemental to God's word.  Your physical body may waste away without food (although God is perfectly capable of supernaturally sustaining you), but your soul and very being are in danger if you are not taking in God's word.  Also, how do we prioritize our lives?  Are we planning our lives around meals or spending time with our Heavenly Father and ministering to His children?  Is the prayer before the meal more important, or the meal itself?  For Jesus, it was simple - he spent his quiet, restful times with God, and his active times being a light for the Lord.  Let's do the same!
