So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. In his defense Jesus said to them,
“My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.”
For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. John 5:16-18
Isn't it amazing to think that the Lord has been at His work since before time began? And He is still at work in us. The Jewish leaders were very twisted in their legalistic thinking of "work". God rested from making all of the universe as an example for us to take a break from our creative outputs. However, do you think for even 1 second when He rested that He stopped loving us or thinking of us? Jesus was ALWAYS at God's work - the good work. Even when he withdrew to lonely places, he was in communion with God. The Bible tells us to "Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus." (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). When we do these "always" things, these "good works" of God, we are RESTING our souls, and we are WORKING for God's kingdom. This is no paradox from Jesus, this is the Gospel Truth.
