He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed,
“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”
An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. Luke 22:41-44
Hey, guess what? Jesus did NOT want to die on the cross! He did not want to be tortured, insulted, spat up, and in extreme physical pain for several hours before his body gave out and he died a shameful, public death between two thieves. He is the Son of God, AND he was still a human being in every sense of the word. Therefore, he felt suffering more deeply than any of us ever have or ever will. However, he did it anyway. He chose US over himself. Jesus carried out all that was before him because he loves us. He loves us more deeply than any of us ever have or ever will because that is the kind of Savior he is. As we look closely this season at the words of Jesus, I beg you to look even more closely at his actions if you want to see who he truly is.
