“My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”
“You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered,
“You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”
Before Jesus died on the cross, God's kingdom had not yet come. That is why Jesus was born - to usher in a new era of God's reign here on earth in our hearts, to build a bridge for the Holy Spirit. The truth is the Word of God, which is Jesus. We cannot begin to understand who God is and what His thoughts are, but Jesus can. Not only that, but Jesus can translate holy wisdom from the Eternal One to our language. Jesus doesn't just give us more words of scripture, but through his amazing sacrifice, we can finally read the good news and KNOW it in our heart of hearts by the Holy Spirit at work in our lives. This is Christ's grand truth.
This is a painting by the Russian landscape painter Maxim Nikiforovich Vorobiev. In 1820, he traveled to the Middle East and made sketches and watercolor sheets of the scenes of the day in the Holy Land. This is from the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.
