Into your hands

December 24, 2016

Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him. At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice,

"Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).

And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice,

“Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”

When he had said this, he breathed his last. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people. When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”

Matthew 27:50-54; Mark 15:32-34, 37-38

Jesus' death wrought devastation and beauty.  The world shuddered and the rocks testified to the impact of God's Spirit being exiled from this earthly kingdom.  The immensity of his ultimate sacrifice - that healed the relationship between our Lord and us - was enough to breathe life back into dry bones.  And the world has never been the same.
